The BMW M division has given us two incredible twin-turbo inline-6 engines in recent years: the S55 (2014–2020) and the S58 (2020–present). Both are 3.0L twin-turbocharged inline-6 engines, but there are significant differences that affect tuning potential, reliability, and performance.

Engine Architecture

S55 The S55 is based on the N55 engine block but with significant M-specific upgrades. It features a closed-deck design, forged crankshaft, and two mono-scroll turbochargers. The S55 produces 425–500 hp from the factory depending on the variant (base, Competition, CS, GTS).

S58 The S58 is a ground-up M design sharing more DNA with the B58 than the N55. It features a stronger closed-deck block, forged internals, and twin mono-scroll turbochargers. Factory output ranges from 453–550 hp. The S58 also benefits from a more advanced cooling system with multiple radiators and transmission coolers.

Tuning Potential

Both engines respond exceptionally well to tuning. With bolt-ons and a proper ECU tune:

  • S55: 550–650 WHP on stock turbos (E85 mix), 700+ WHP with upgraded turbos
  • S58: 600–700 WHP on stock turbos (E85 mix), 800+ WHP with upgraded turbos

The S58's stronger bottom end and improved cooling give it a clear advantage at higher power levels.

Which Should You Choose?

If you're building a dedicated track car with 700+ WHP goals, the S58 platform (G80/G82/G87) offers more headroom. For a more budget-friendly build with excellent aftermarket support, the S55 (F80/F82) remains a fantastic choice with proven results.

Recommended KL-Performance Upgrades

  • S58: G25-660 or EFR 8474 turbo upgrade, high-flow downpipe, Stage 2 ECU tune
  • S55: Stage 2 turbo package, charge pipe upgrade, methanol injection kit

Both platforms are capable of incredible performance. The right choice depends on your budget, goals, and preferred chassis.
